The BEST Western Australian Farmstays to Consider

Last Updated on 30 January 2025 by Ariana Svenson

If you’re looking for a truly unique experience, I highly recommend looking at Western Australia farm stays

These farms offer a chance to get away from the crowds, experience fresh air and a unique way of life, as well as connect to how and where our food comes from. It is an extremely recommended and bucket list-worthy Western Australian experience.

What is a Farmstay?

Let’s be clear about our definition of a farm stay; as locals, we have a fairly distinct opinion of what constitutes a farm stay.

A true farm stay is one where you stay on a working farm and can participate in the activities on a day-to-day basis.

In reality, it would be difficult for farmers to balance the needs of their livestock, crops and guests, and so, in our opinion, some of the best farm stays in Western Australia are those that include organised activities, like a tractor ride or animal feeding times.

Also, able to legitimately use the name ‘farm stay’ are those places which are active farms, where the farmer carries on his daily activities alongside the farm stay or accommodation business (But the guests do not participate).

Several places on this list use the name farm stay, but I think it would be better to refer to them as ‘rural retreat’ as they are located around farmland, but it’s not really a working farm, and the interaction between the guests, animals and farm life doesn’t occur.

In my opinion, a true farm stay is where the guests participate in farm life and have experiences with animals or farming – but that’s just my opinion. I am happy to hear your thoughts; please drop them in the comments below.

How is a Farmstay Different from Glamping?

Glamping or comfortable camping is similar to a farm stay, as it is generally in a rural environment and connects you with the sky, stars, and fresh air.

However, a glamping experience features a tent; generally, there are no farm or agricultural aspects.

Glamping is also an excellent experience, and we have covered some of the best glamping in Western Australia here. If you’re considering glamping in a specific area, read our guide to glamping in Margaret River and luxury camping and glamping in Perth.

Why Choose a Farm Holiday?

It’s natural that if you spend your life in a city, then you may be hesitant about what a Farmstay will offer. Farmstay accommodation can be of a different style than a standard hotel and is, by nature, outdoors or on a farm.

We think that a farm stay holiday is great for children aged about three and above. In short, older toddlers will hold your hand and obey warnings like “Don’t touch”.

Children having the freedom to run around the farm makes an Australian farm stay very special.

A stay on an Australian farm is something that every visitor to Australia should put on their ‘must-do’ list. What a truly iconic Australian experience that should be on your bucket list!

For Aussie kids, a farm stay is also an excellent opportunity as they have space to run and experience nature safely. Another term to Google is “Working farm holiday”.

Additionally, a farm holiday stay experience allows children to learn about where their food comes from – especially if they participate in milking or egg collecting, which are both popular experiences on many farm stays.

They also get to touch and interact with animals, which is a must-do for all children, especially in helping them overcome fear.

Some Things to Know about Farm Stays

If you think it all sounds good so far, here are some things to know before you take the leap.

There are lots of animals

It’s a farm, there are animals. They poo, and that can be part of the experience. Be prepared, knowing that some smells and animals might be challenging! However, meeting the cute local residents is also a total highlight for the kids.

There are lots of creepy crawlies

Whereas the animals are a plus, most people aren’t keen on the creepy crawlies and insects you can find in farm buildings and around farms.

There is often lots of mud and dirt

Many farm stays are working farms, meaning mud is around, especially after it has rained. You might get very muddy feet or dirty clothes. Don’t wear your best clothes and definitely no white shoes. Anyways, it is an adventure, so do dress down when you are on the farm!  (Pack your gum boots / wellington boots if you have them!)

Children having the freedom to run around the farm makes an Australian farm stay very special.

Many farmstays are isolated

By isolated, we mean quite far from a city – in the middle of nowhere – only farms and trees are around. This is because that is where farms are. You might need to drive 30 minutes or more to reach a shopping centre.

Farm life and city life and standards are different by nature

Some farm stays can be quite rustic. Sometimes, farmers have decided to diversify their working farms and have never been trained in customer service; others are professionals with tourism experience.

Many farm stays we have visited are quite rustic and old, meaning they will not have the same level of luxury or facilities you would have in a hotel.

You will probably need to self-cater

As most farm stays are quite remote, they mostly offer self-catering options, meaning you need to go with food and prepare to cook for yourself. Some people find these country-style barbeques with their families a wonderful bonding opportunity.

Make sure there are farm animals

Occasionally, ‘farm stays’ do not actually have any animals. They may be more natural retreats away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Check this out when booking so your expectations are not dashed when the experience is not as you hoped.

No Wi-Fi – and sometimes no mobile reception

If you feel the need to keep connected while on your farm stay vacation, then make sure you read the details of your chosen farm stay listing. Many farms in Australia have satellite internet at the farmhouse and, therefore, offer Wi-Fi in common rooms around that house, but not in the cabins or chalets.

Some farm stays do not offer Wi-Fi at all and rely on people using their phone data.

Others simply state that phone reception is poor and there is no Wi-Fi. Some people will embrace the idea of an enforced digital detox, but others will not. Most farm stays offer things like board games in the cottage on request.

Farmstays in the Perth Hills and Near Perth

These farm stays are located within a 90-minute’ drive of the Perth CBD, meaning that you could quickly pick up your hire car at the airport and at your accommodation.

Unlike many of the WA farm stays on this list, these places are located near shopping centres and restaurants. While there are still animals, there is not the isolated feel typically associated with a farm stay.

You could use these farm stays as a base to explore much of Perth and its surroundings, albeit needing a fair bit of driving.
