Greens Pool, Denmark, is one of Western Australia’s most incredible beaches, a sheltered swimming spot that has earned its place on countless lists of best beaches in Australia, and for good reason. It’s located at the western end of the stunning William Bay National Park and has become one of the most popular tourist hotspots along the south coast, one that simply cannot be missed.

What Makes Greens Pool So Popular?
Greens Pool, Denmark, has hit the big time; it is “Insta-famous” and now has over 300,000 visitors each year! However, this gorgeous natural swimming pool has been a favorite for many years and deservedly so.

Here are the incredible things to do here that make Greens Pool so popular:
Swimming

On a summer’s day, it’s like a picture postcard beach. You’ll find beautiful turquoise water (the green water that it is named for!) and pure white sand. The beach has often been described as “one of Mother Nature’s most inviting swimming pools”.
The beach is completely sheltered from the waves of the great Southern Ocean by rounded rock boulders, leaving calm, waveless waters and a gradual slope into the sea. On windy days, Greens Pool offers a sheltered cove – a great place to swim and enjoy a wind-free beach experience.

Keep in mind that strong currents are sometimes present at Greens Pool, especially at the eastern end/outside the boulders. Always swim within your capabilities and stay away from anywhere the waves break.
Snorkelling
Thanks to the incredible water colour at Greens Pool, it’s the perfect place for snorkelling. You’ll see a range of reef fish such as zebra fish, wrasse, old wives, silver drummers, moonlighters, and banded sweeps.
You may even spot stingray and eagle rays sliding along the bottom of the pool! Keep an eye out for King George whiting and Australasian snapper, especially near the deeper drops and channels.
A word of warning, be aware of the current exiting the pool and don’t get caught up in it.
The Greens Pool Lookout
The main lookout at William Bay National Park is located just above the beach, a short walk from the revamped car park.
From the lookout, you can see the beautiful color of the water at Greens Pool and over to Mazzoletti Beach, the eastern coast of William Bay in the distance. You can’t see the Elephant Rocks which are around the coast, behind you.
The path from the lookout is sealed and gently sloping. It leads to a staircase that takes you directly onto the beach itself.

Greens Pool Beach and Elephant Rocks
These two places are often considered the same by locals. Both are located in William Bay National Park on the same stretch of stunning coastline and are adjacent to each other.
You can park at the main Greens Pool car park to easily explore Elephant Rocks and Greens Pool. There is a walking trail to the beach, or you can clamber over the rocks.
Elephant Rocks are a must-visit! These beautiful rock formations look like giant elephant-like sculptures formed by the shaped huge boulders. Nature has done a fantastic job turning these boulders into amazing sculptures.

We love rock climbing around there. We also enjoy searching for animals in the rock pools and dodging the rowdy elephants.
Just behind Elephant Rocks, you’ll find Elephant Cove, another calm, swimming spot sheltered by granite boulders.

When to Visit Greens Pool, Denmark, Western Australia
For swimming and enjoying the beach, it’s best to visit during the summer months when the water is calm.
However, the region itself is gorgeous, no matter what the season & the entire southern coastline is magical. Some of the most stunning sunsets are wintery ones, and the ocean is far more exciting to watch on a rough, windy day.

On windy days, Greens Pool offers a sheltered cove due to its surrounding rocks, making it a great place to swim and enjoy a wind-free beach experience.
My family usually has our first swim of the year in October, typically in a wetsuit, and then we swim over the summer without wetsuits. – It takes a while to get used to the temperatures, but there’s nothing like a brisk wake-up call in the morning.
What is the Best Time of Day to Visit Greens Pool?
If you visit during the early morning or late in the day, there are far fewer crowds and much better photo opportunities.

You can enjoy the pool without having to share the experience with many others. The prime time for snorkelling is generally around 7:00–7:30 AM, when the water is even clearer!
How To Get To Greens Pool, William Bay National Park, Denmark

Your best option to get here is to drive. Public transport won’t take you directly to the beach, but having a car means you can explore more of William Bay National Park and the surrounding area. If you don’t have your own car, consider hiring a car.
Denmark to Greens Pool
Denmark is the closest town to Green Pool and the perfect place to base yourself to explore. It’s just a short, scenic 14.5-mile drive west of the town along the South Coast Highway. Greens Pool is most commonly accessed via the William Bay Road.
Greens Pool to Perth
From Perth, Denmark is a 4.5-hour drive away. Follow Albany Highway (State Route 30) to Mount Barker, turn onto Mount Barker–Denmark Road into town, then a short scenic drive west on South Coast Highway and left onto William Bay Road.

Things to Know When Visiting Greens Pool in Denmark
Car parks
There are now two car parks: one for Greens Pool and one for Elephant Rocks, part of a recent upgrade that has doubled the parking capacity to 200 bays (as well as adding flush toilets), in an attempt to accommodate the large number of people who visit (although it still fills up).
If you’re heading to Greens Pool, take the first right off William Bay Road. This car park sits directly above the beach, with a short walk down the stairs to that famous turquoise water. If you stay on the road you will come to the Elephant Rocks car park, which is close enough that overflow from one often spills into the other.

Each year (usually from December 26th to January 10th), Greens Pool carpark gets very full. Try to visit before 8 am or after about 3 pm.
Parking alongside the road extends about 1km back from the main carpark and up to 1km from the Elephant Rocks carpark.

Take Care of the Environment
Please don’t damage the environment when you park. Yes, get off the road, but don’t drive your 4WD up a rehabilitated bank, completely destroying it or drive your big rig over planted areas with stakes in them. Be conscientious! Make sure you also take your rubbish with you – this is a pristine area with a nature aquarium.
Safety

During Peak season, Greens Pool gets extremely crowded, and it’s just not built for these numbers… Here are some things to keep in mind:
- There are no lifeguards at Greens Pool. While the sheltered bay is usually safe, strong rips exist outside the boulders, and tragically, drownings have occurred in the wider area. Stay within the pool and supervise children closely.
- It’s also important to know that phone reception can be limited, and you will not always have service.
- Drive slowly and carefully – many people, including small children and families, are walking along the road.
- If you don’t like the idea of how crowded Greens Pool can get, there are plenty of other beaches nearby, such as Ocean Beach (make sure you swim between the flags) and Lights Beach (swim with care). Parry’s Beach and Peaceful Bay (this is the best option for people with kids – read our guide to Peaceful Bay).
- Mozzies can be nippy around William Bay, especially at dusk and dawn. Make sure you remember to pack a spray!

Location: 65 Rice Rd, Denmark
Distance from Greens Pool: 7km – 8 mins
Just 5 minutes from Green Pool, William Bay Cottages are, in my opinion, the best accommodation option in the Greens Pool area.
The cottages are very romantic, well-appointed, and even luxurious. Some have spas for a decadent break! The decking outside was relaxing to just sit and watch all the birdlife.
There are seven 1-3 bedroom self-contained cottages in total (so book early). Each has been lovingly handcrafted from locally sourced timber and stone. In addition, the kitchens are well-appointed with a full range of cooking utensils. They are impeccably clean and well presented.
At night, tucked up in your comfy bed, you can listen to the sound of the waves in the distance. This is because the cottages are about a 20-minute walk to Mazzoletti Beach. Kids love feeding the farm animals. They also have a tennis court and a game room, which has a pool table and table tennis.
I’ve seen the William Bay cottages described as luxury accommodation in Denmark. My conclusion is that they are high-quality, well-presented places to stay in a gorgeous environment. They offer seclusion and a chance to have a break from busy lives.
