A Roundup of the Best Dog Friendly Accommodation South West WA

Last Updated on 23 October 2024 by Ariana Svenson

We are delighted to share our experiences in finding the best dog friendly accommodation south west WA!  When our delightful Beaglier puppy joined the family I was quite concerned that it would cramp our style so to speak.  Would we still be able to go on holidays?  Would we be able to find dog friendly accommodation, and much more?

I’m pleased to say, like when you become a parent, you adapt to the new member of your family.  Sure, you won’t travel in the same way as you did before – and you won’t stay in the same style of accommodation.  However, overall the experience is only better because of having your pooch along for the ride.

By the way, if you want to explore more getaways near Perth, feel free to dive into our blog post for some travel inspiration! There are many more places you could go with your dog, such as Peaceful Bay.

Disclosure: Through my site there are links to affiliates, which means that I might receive commission if you buy something after clicking them. This costs you no more, and you definitely don’t pay extra. However, I do get a small amount which contributes to the upkeep of this blog. Thanks so much for all of your support. We hope you have a ball in Western Australia!

Pet Friendly Accommodation South West – Important Things to Know

Check Whether it’s Camping or Cabins

When you are searching ‘pet friendly accommodation’ many website listings will show caravan parks and camping grounds.  This is true; many of them accept dogs and pets in the camping section.  However, only a few (including some on this list) will allow them in the chalets or cabins on site.

Check if Dogs are Welcome in Peak Periods

While most caravan parks and campgrounds (though not those in the National Parks) will allow a dog in your caravan or tent, there are often conditions around dogs in peak periods.  In a nutshell, many places don’t allow dogs around Christmas, New Years, and Easter.  Others extend it to the entire January school holidays.  In some cases the only way you can find out this detail is by giving them a quick call.

Book Early to Get the Best Dog Friendly Accommodation in the South West!

Across the board, all the different pet friendly places state the same thing – the pet friendly accommodation options are very popular so it is essential to book early.

Ask Yourself – How Does my Dog Behave?

Seriously, we all know our dogs.  Are they barkers, whiners or just cheery old souls?  How do they react if you let them off the lead?  If you are at a farmstay or rural retreat with wildlife, might your dog lose their cool and chase the animals?   Are they generally well behaved and not going to disturb the other guests?  Be honest with yourself and if your gorgeous puppy isn’t yet well trained, it might be worth considering staying home!

Leaving your Dog in the Accommodation

So you’ve found an awesome dog friendly accommodation in the south west WA?  Make sure you read the fine print!  A lot of places will not let you leave your dog unattended in the accommodation.  And let’s face it, they are on holidays too, we shouldn’t want to leave them locked away all day.

However, it can be difficult, especially when there are so many beautiful National Parks around or fabulous restaurants we have been dying to eat at.  If you do intend to leave the dog (and the accommodation permits it) – do they bark, whine or cry?

Train your Dog for Traveling!

If you are going to travel regularly with your dog we highly recommend investing in a crate/ dog carrier for your dog.  A properly crate trained dog that has been properly crate trained should of the crate as their safe place and will be happy to hang out there.  As the crate is “theirs” it becomes like a home away from home.  It can help your dog to feel comfortable in unfamiliar places or when you have to go out and need to leave him or her behind.

In addition to taking our dog crate, we also take a small dog bed that can be rolled up and as they sleep on that at home.  It adds to the familiar feeling for them when on the road.  Quite like a baby’s comforter toy!

Doggy cuddles on holidays!

Pet Friendly Accommodation Bunbury

Discovery Parks Bunbury Foreshore

Also known as the Koombana Bay Caravan Park, The Bunbury Foreshore Discovery Park is one of the best places to stay in Bunbury.  It is right opposite Koombana Bay with nice beaches, good cafe and the Bunbury Dolphin Discovery Centre.  It is also easy walking distance to Bunbury CBD.  Well maintained grounds, lots of activities available for kids.  There are 2 bedroom and 3 bedroom chalets that are self-contained, well equipped and spacious, great for larger families.

Only some of the accommodation is pet friendly- specifically the Deluxe 2 bedroom cabins.  If you book directly on the Discovery Parks website you can see pet friendly availability, or you need to call ahead.  The pet friendly accommodation at the Bunbury Foreshore is limited to a maximum of 4 people.

Pet Friendly Accommodation Busselton

Broadwater Beach Resort Busselton

One of the most popular dog friendly Busselton accommodation places is the Broadwater Beach Resort.  There is an extra fee to stay with your dog.  These slightly faded resort villas are showing their age, but ours was clean and well-presented.  As we share in our review (Broadwater Beach Resort Review) the Broadwater Beach has a great location within a very short stroll to a beach, including a dog beach.  The accommodation is a small apartment with an upstairs and downs stairs that includes cooking facilities.  We love that there are two pools, indoor is heated, also heated spa.

While one of the dog friendly Busselton accommodations, the Broadwater Beach Resort does apply a plethora of rules to your dog’s stay, including that pets are not to be left unaccompanied at any time and should be well mannered.  In addition, pets are not permitted on guest beds. Also, no wet pets inside. While the agreement just makes common sense it’s worth reading over to ensure that you are going to abide by the rules.  There are so few dog friendly Busselton accommodation options that it would be a shame to spoil it for others!

Lewana Cottages will look familiar to south west families,  as it is property is one of only four former forestry settlements converted to a recreation camp in the 1970s.  For example, Lewana looks very similar to Tone River, which was once the  Tone River wilderness retreat.
