Our Ferguson Farmstay Review – It Was Amazing!

Last Updated on 25 July 2024 by Ariana Svenson

We hope you find our Ferguson Farmstay review and family photos both informative and helpful in deciding whether this is the farm experience for you!

The Ferguson Valley Farmstay is one of the most kid-friendly places we have ever stayed.   With rose-filled gardens and roosters crowing, stunning views, and charming farm accommodation, this is the best farm stay Western Australia in our experiences so far!  (And we have stayed in a few Western Australian farmstays!)

If you are a little doubtful if a farm stay is the style accommodation that will suit your family, we have included a handy guide to farm stays at the end of our Ferguson Valley Farmstay Review.

What Makes Ferguson Farmstay so Special

There is a lot about the Ferguson Farmstay that we love; to start with it has to be one of the best Perth Farmstay options!  (Well, as it is only 1.5 hours from the Perth Metropolitan area we are calling it a farmstay in Perth!).

If you have never heard of the Ferguson Valley, it is because it is one of Western Australia’s best-kept secrets.  Discover all the things to do in our post, The Best Things to do in The Ferguson Valley WA.  In short, it is lush, green, and filled with dairy cows and good country goodness.  Also, the Ferguson Valley is the home to some great little wineries and a couple of pubs (all with great views) and of course Gnomesville.

Let’s talk about the Ferguson Farmstay itself – the location is gorgeous with stunning views across to the ocean, and Bunbury.  Also, it offers the perfect combination of great accommodation and animal feeding, pony rides, tractor rides, trampoline, and playground.

Ferguson Valley Farmstay – The Cottages

With 11 gorgeous rammed earth chalets, nestled on a steep hill, you feel secluded with views of the rolling hills, views of the lights of the city of Bunbury.

At night, make sure you go outside and look up to enjoy the expansive star-studded sky.  Or sip a hot drink on your private veranda.

The chalets are made of rammed earth and feel just like home, with comfortable beds, though you do need to do bring your own linens.  My children especially loved the farm cats that seemed at ease around the chalets and would sun themselves on our front veranda in the morning.

The kitchen had a large fridge freezer, microwave, and a large modern gas oven and cooktop.  There was plenty of sharp knife and utensils too. Each chalet has fully equipped kitchens including a dishwasher and fridge.  As you are far from restaurants, self-catering or a BBQ outdoors is a must (and good for the budget).

Ferguson Valley Farm Stay Activities

One of the reasons we’ve ranked this one of the best farm stays southwest  WA is that the daily farm activities are awesome, and included in the nightly room rate at the Ferguson Farmstay.  Starting at 8:30 am each day there are emus, kangaroos, goats, ducks, chickens, pigs, and rabbits all looking for their breakfast.  Kids get plenty of chances to feed them!

This is followed by a short miniature pony ride, where kids ride shortest to tallest.  The ride is sure to get a grin from smaller kids (though our 8-year-old was a bit big).  Then everybody is off for the highlight of the morning, with a tractor ride.  We all pile into a trailer and ride through the picturesque farm to feed bread to the cows!

The Ferguson Farmstay is a polished Perth farmstay experience.  It provides enough of the country to feel you’ve gotten out and experienced the countryside, but at the same time is not too challenging so you are uncomfortable!

In addition to the animal feeding, there is a playground, goldfish pond, trampolines, and even the cutest little cubby house.

Ferguson Farmstay Reviews

During our stay, the 10 chalets were fully booked.  About half of the guests were there for their second visit:  they said, quite simply, “our first 2-day stay was not enough”.  These families chose to come back for 3-5 day stay periods a second time, because they loved it so much the first time around and agreed wholeheartedly this was the best farmstay near Perth.

A couple of families said that they felt Ferguson Farmstay was a better value for their money than other farm stays near Perth or in the South West of Western Australia.  The others had longer minimum stay periods and premium pricing for peak periods like school holidays.  On the other hand, they rated the Ferguson Farmstay because it is a short drive from Perth.  Others mentioned they liked it as it was pretty clean so gumboots are not essential, and best of all there are lots of animals to feed!  For others, it’s the best farmstay in Perth/the Perth region because of the wide range of farm activities on offer, like canoeing in the dams.

Ferguson Farmstay – Tips from Other Families

  • Bring your own food scraps from home so you can feed the animals when you arrive.
  • Rubber boots are handy, but not essential.
  • Need to bring your own linen.
  • The winter months in southwest Western Australia can be quite wet and rainy.  A couple of return visitors mentioned that they had spent lovely days around a crackling wood fire playing board games with their children.  In addition, there are DVDs, rackets, and balls available to borrow at any time too.

Ferguson Valley Farm Stay for Non-Guests

If you are not a guest at the Ferguson Farmstay you can still arrive and participate in the farm activities each morning (for a price).
