A Complete Guide to the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk Walpole Denmark

Last Updated on 26 August 2024 by Ariana Svenson

The Valley Of The Giants Tree Top Walk  Walpole  is one of Western Australia’s most iconic sites!  This wonderful Tree Top Walk amongst the rare red Tingle trees is awesome.  It combines a walk through the base some of the biggest trees we have ever seen with a bird’s eye view at the tops of the trees from a very cool upside-down suspension bridge.  In this very detailed guide we have shared so many great tips to get the best out of your visit to the Valley of the Giants area located between Walpole and Denmark.

Our visit to this Tree Top Walk inspired our family bucket list The Best Tree Top Walks around the World

We’re fans of the Walpole Wilderness area and love this nature-based escape destination.  Don’t miss our super comprehensive full Guide to Things to do in Walpole WA.  Also, Top 3 Stops on a Walpole to Albany Trip is a great read.  And, if you are a wildflowers lover like we are, Where to Find the Best Wildflowers in Western Australia is a must-read.

Over the past few years we’ve been lucky enough to visit the Valley Of The Giants Tree Top Walk several times.  We have compiled this awesome list of how to best prepare for a trip, what to expect, photography tips, and more.

Once you arrive at the site, there are three main things to see.

  • The 600 meters Treetop Walk around the top of the treetops to a height of 40 meters
  • another shorter walk through the bases of the Red Tingle Trees,
  • an information filled information center.

Tips to Visit the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk

Go Around the Tree Top Walk Two or More Times

Your ticket gives you entry to the Tree Top Walk and once you are in, you can go around and around as many times as you like.  It takes about 20 minutes to walk around.  The first time we were so caught up by the height and movement of the suspension bridge (yes, it wobbles!) we didn’t really look at the trees.  The second time around, we relaxed and got the famous bird’s eye view, listened to the wind in the trees, marveled at the view, and did some bird watching.  So definitely do the Tree Top Walk at least twice!

The Valley Of The Giants Tree Top Walk is wheelchair accessible, (that means 100% pram friendly) and we were glad that our active toddler was strapped in!

Yes, you can walk through a living tree!

Stand Inside a Living Tree

Don’t miss the Ancient Empire Walk when visiting the Valley of the Giants.  As the name suggests, this short walk is like you have stepped back to when dinosaurs roamed the planet.  You walk through giant hollow butted Red Tingle trees which are still alive.  Do the Tree Top Walk, then do the Ancient Empire and then return to the Tree Top Walk for some fascinating views on perspective.  We also did this at a place called the Giant Tingle Tree, which was an excellent experience also!

Visit Early or Late in the Day to Get the Place to Yourself

The Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk is one of Western Australia’s most iconic sites and so can get very busy, especially in the Christmas – New Year Break.  Don’t do what we did and visit during that time.  The parking was very full and there were queues on the Tree Top Walk.  So much for communing with nature!

If you have to visit in this busy period aim to arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Contact the Valley Of The Giants Tree Top Walk for their extended summer hours..

Check Out the School Holidays Activities Program for Kids

The Tree Top Walk offers a great range of activities for kids of all ages.  Make sure you check them out to get new insight into the forest or to extend your stay… they include kids art,  guided walk for children and even an opportunity to walk underneath the famous Tree Top Walk Walpole!

Visit to the Tree Top Walk Denmark – At Night

A visit to the Tree Top Walk Denmark is amazing anytime, but at night it is truly magical.  We loved our visit to the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk so much during our last visit, that we decided to go back again.  However this time we went during their summer activity program “Late Night Friday’s”.

A Visit To The Tree Top Walk Denmark - At Night!

This meant that we were able to drive down from Perth during the day making a few stops along the way, then book into our accommodation.  We were still able to make it to the Tree Top Walk Denmark for their 6 pm night opening.  This was a brilliant use of our time which was limited to just 3 nights in the Walpole WA area.

For ideas about where to stop on the way, read A Guide to South West WA – South West Australia Road Trip Ideas and things to do in Denmark.

On the recommendation from some locals, we picked up some pizza and hot chips from Mal & Barb’s Flaming Hot Takeaway in Walpole village.  We then headed out to the Valley of the Giants to eat at their special night picnic tables under the trees, which are only available on “Late night Fridays”.  We enjoyed pizza under the trees in a beautiful ambiance!  This was a fantastic way to sit back, relax, and hear the sounds of the forest in the early evening.

Then we headed out to the tree top walk and, unbelievably, we were the only people there!  This in itself is a fantastic reason to visit the Tree Top Walk Denmark during the night!  If visiting during the day it can get quite busy.

For a photographer, the colors of the walk in the sunset period were muted and gorgeous.  We got some stunning photos (more about photography tips below)!  This is another great reason to visit the Tree Top Walk at night.

A Visit To The Tree Top Walk Denmark - At Night!

First, we went down to enjoy the huge trees in the Ancient Empire and then back to the shop.  By the time we did this, it was falling dark and we heard the excited call of some other people “We’ve just seen a QUOKKA”!  We went running outside to see the cutest little Quokka you can ever imagine!

Unbeknown to the common urban myth, the cute little furry Quokkas do NOT just live on Rottnest Island!  Quokkas once lived all over the southwest but were reduced to Rottnest Island after European settlement.  Now, after extensive fox baiting (who are their predators) and relocation programs Quokkas are once again flourishing in the Walpole Nornalup National Park.  They are even fairly easy to see around the Valle Of The Giants Tree Top Walk at night.

For our final walk around the Tree Top Walk, it was completely dark.  The sensation that you have on the Tree Top Walk during the day is that it is very VERY high!  This wasn’t so evident during the night walk. It made us more focused on using our other senses like sight, sound, and smell.  By this time there were quite a lot of people!  In particular families with small children, like ourselves, who were a bit noisy and using the flashlights a lot!

We dropped back and let the people go ahead of us.  We went quietly around the walk with our torches turned off, focusing on using our other senses.  Our eyes adjusted and we could see more than expected.  We were able to hear a range of different animals rustling and running about in the bush and finally, with sight taken from us, we could smell the powerful aromas and eucalypts of the forest.

We also got to do some stargazing from the highest pylon before heading back to our accommodation and getting the kids to bed at 9.30 pm.

Why Doing the Tree Top Walk Denmark at Night is Awesome

  1. Early in the evening, there are few other people (at least on the night we went).
  2. You might get to see Australia animals like a quokka, at close range.
  3. Walking the Tree Top Walk at night is completely different and you use senses like hearing and smell.
  4. Great use of your time, especially when you have a short amount of time.

Photography Tips – Tree Top Walk Walpole

The Valley Of The Giants Tree Top Walk is one of Western Australia’s most iconic photographed sites.  We want to offer some tree top walk photography tips based on our experiences.  In short, this site is a photographer’s paradise while being a challenge!

We don’t profess to have amazing photography skills, and feel under-qualified to provide photography tips or advice, BUT (deep breath) a lot of the best photos are when you are well prepared!

Tree Top Walk Photography Tips

Perspective

How do you get the perspective of these trees? We got down as low as we could and still we couldn’t fit the whole tree into the lens!

If you have extra lenses, make sure you have them with you.  We were able to get some cool perspective shots like the one below.

Tree Top Walk Photography Tips

Be Prepared For Movement

The walk wobbles. With a big zoom lens and kids making the walk sway (a lot).  I was disappointed to see many of my images blurry.   Next time I’ll probably take a different lens without so much zoom.

A tripod would also be nice but given the kids move at such a fast pace probably not much of an option at the moment.  Just be prepared for movement.  Whatever way you best photograph under those conditions is one of our Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk photography tips.

Tree Top Walk Photography Tips

Arrive Early/Stay Late

If you are looking for pictures without the people arrive at opening time – or stay right until closing time.  As we mentioned above, these are the least crowded times to visit the Tree Top Walk Walpole.  However, be prepared for low light due to the thickness of the forest canopy.

Also, these trees grow here because there is a lot of annual rain.  Many times we have visited it has been pouring rain. Go prepared!

Tree Top Walk Photography Tips

Late Night Visits

As we mentioned above, the night walk was awesome!  The late-night special opening also gave a gorgeous soft light and lots of special opportunities.  We highly recommend contacting the Valley Of The Giants Tree Top Walk and asking when they have late-night openings.  They are typically in the summer or school holidays and are a MUST for any photographer.

More Than Just Tingle Trees

There is much more to the Tree Top Walk Walpole than the Tingle Trees.  We saw Quokkas during our night walk and enjoyed the shop and educational area.  Make sure you give yourself enough time to explore and also to put these tree top walk photography tips into practice

How do I get to the Valley of the Giants Tree top Walk?

The Valley Of The Giants Tree Top Walk is about 420 kilometers from Perth.  Located on the Valley of the Giants Road off the South Coast Highway, Nornalup.  From Denmark it’s about a 45-minute drive west along South Coast Highway, from Walpole it is about 20 minutes.

How Long Do I need for the Tree Top Walk Walpole?

You would need a minimum of 1 hour to visit this site.  However, that would make it very poor value for money as the Tree Top Walk entry is relatively expensive. We would recommend planning your visit and spend at least 2 hours.

Value for Money

At $52.50 for a family of 2 adults and 2 kids, but only 1-2 hours of activities then this is a relatively expensive activity.  We strongly recommend looking at our different suggestions here to make the visit a bit longer.  Note; many holiday activities have an extra charge!

Top Tip! If you decide you don’t want to fork out for the Tree Top Walk, the friendly ladies in the shop told us you can walk around the Ancient Empire for FREE!
