Understanding the Margaret River region

The Margaret River wine region is famous worldwide for world-class waves, fine dining and the city of  Busselton in the North, and Margaret River town in the centre.

In addition, several sizeable towns, villages and localities are sprinkled around the Margaret River region, and people who aren’t familiar with the area make the mistake of saying, “They are in Margaret River.”

Well, I’m here to say they are NOT really in Margaret River. If you book accommodation in the North (say in Dunsborough, Yallingup or Busselton) and you want to spend time near the big waves of Prevelly or at the wineries around Margaret River town, you will spend a LOT of time in the car each day.   (eg Busselton to Prevelly Beach is about 50 minutes drive one way, in good traffic!)

Boranup Forest is to the south of the Margaret River Region

Augusta is a charming seaside village right to the south of the Margaret River Wine region. While its ocean views are spectacular, it’s not as accessible to the wineries and activities around Margaret River Town. (Augusta is about 1 hours and 15 minutes’ drive south of Busselton!!!)

It makes sense to get an understanding of what you want to see and do – when booking where you want to stay, hence this explanation of where the towns are, before we delve into this summary of glamping options in the broader Margaret River area!

Why Go Glamping in the Margaret River Region

The Margaret River Region, renowned for its wine, surf, and natural beauty, offers an immersive experience that’s only made better with glamping.

Here are five amazing reasons to go glamping in this beautiful part of Western Australia:

  • Nature Meets Luxury: Glamping allows you to be close to the nature of Margaret River without compromising on comfort. Enjoy luxuries like hot showers and plush bedding, then step straight into nature.
  • An Eco-Friendly Experience: Many glamping sites prioritise sustainability. Staying in an eco-conscious tent means reducing your carbon footprint while still enjoying the region’s wonders.
  • More Privacy: Glamping often offers secluded spots rather than being confined to a hotel room in a bustling centre, ensuring peace and privacy. This makes it an ideal choice for romantic getaways, family adventures or reflective solo trips away from the crowds.
  • The Accommodation is the experience:  sometimes we stay in accommodation in a utilitarian way; the hotel is a place to sleep and shower… but I love that glamping is the experience itself, so we can take it easy and hang about for hours, connecting as family/ or as a couple, as the case may be.
  • Un-plugging; While the situation varies, some of these glamping experiences are unplugged which means its time to get the books out, enjoy roasting marshmellows around the campfire, or a cosy game of cards.  That’s what holidays are all about!

Permanent Fixtures VS Moveable Glamping Tents – Which One to Choose?

When you’re booking a glamping trip, there are two main options to choose from – Permanent fixtures and moveable tents.

Moveable tents are booked through a glamping company and pitched wherever you please, whether on a campsite, near a beach or in your friend’s backyard.

Moveable tents add an element of customization and offer a fresh backdrop for your glamping adventure. You can normally add on extras such as a hamper, bike hire or added luxury when booking.

On the other hand, permanent fixtures are tents located at a glamping site booked similarly to how you would book a hotel.

Permanent fixtures, entrenched at specific sites, offer a seamlessly integrated experience. These accommodations often include on-site cafes, guest laundry, and other amenities.

We’ve covered both options in the article so you can know all the available options.
