Perth and the surrounding areas have so much to see and do. Being from Western Australia, we know this area well! As a family, we have spent so much time exploring all that Perth and the surrounding areas have to offer.
We consider these day trips the best options from Perth, even though there are so many more we could include. If you’re looking for trips longer than a day, make sure you also read our guides to the top weekend getaways from Perth and the best road trips from Perth.

Why We Recommend Self Drive Day Trips – A Mini Epic Road Trip!

Why do we recommend taking self-drive day trips from Perth? Firstly, while Perth is a large city, the roadways are well-organised and easy to drive. Road users in Perth tend to be respectful and follow the rules, as long as you also follow standard international road rules.
When you take a self-drive trip, there is a great deal of flexibility in creating your own DIY Perth self-drive itinerary.
There are a lot of suggestions on this list, 34 in total, and they are not all individual day trips. We have made suggestions throughout the article on which trips are best combined into one day.
Three of Our Top Tips about Hiring a Car in Western Australia
Self-drive day trips from Perth open up a world of discovery. For an enjoyable journey, here are three top tips about hiring a car in Western Australia.
Choose the full-to-full policy: Most rentals in Australia come with a full tank of gas. You are expected to return the rental to a full tank before returning the car. Make sure you ask the rental agency about this policy in advance. Be warned, if you return the vehicle with less than a full tank, you will be charged a hefty fee per litre to refuel. Save yourself the hassle (and money) and fill it up before you return it.
Make sure your rental has unlimited miles: You definitely don’t want the stress of keeping track of how many miles (or kilometres!) you have used and how many you have left. Having a car that is unlimited in miles allows you to explore Perth and the surrounding areas at your leisure. Not worrying about miles makes day trips from Perth with kids much more enjoyable.

Don’t speed. Cameras were introduced on country roads in 2025 to take photos of cars that can see if you are wearing a seatbelt, your child is restrained, or you are talking on the phone. You will receive a hefty fine if caught breaking one of these laws (or others). Keep your eye out for the bright yellow mobile towers on the sides of roads. Save yourself the trouble and potential embarrassment by paying attention to local speed limits.

Day Tours and Bus Tour Options
Day tours can also be a fantastic experience, but if you’d rather not drive, Perth has excellent bus and guided tour options that make day tripping easy. This option is particularly useful for things like wine tasting trips! There are shorter drive trip options, such as visiting the wineries and breweries of the Perth Hills, or you could opt for a whistle-stop tour of Margaret River as a day trip from Perth.
The Top Day Trips from Perth: 1 Hour Drive or Less
One of the best things about visiting Perth (and living there for that matter) is just how much you can see without venturing far. Within an hour’s drive, you’ll find coastal towns with fresh seafood and history, family-friendly experiences, and even one of Australia’s oldest wine regions.
Here are the top places to visit within 1 hour or less from Perth. We will cover each in more detail below:
- Perth Hills
- Fremantle
- Penguin Island
- The Swan Valley
- Caversham Wildlife Park
- Rockingham
- Rottnest Island

Perth Hills Day Trips
We love the Perth Hills, and this is possibly my favourite day trip from Perth, having done it many times. This also might be your destination if you are into taking beautiful Instagram photos and don’t want to drive far. In winter and spring, the hills literally come alive with the sound of rushing falls, and some of the Best Perth Waterfalls are found in this area. If you’re considering bringing your dog to Perth, the Perth Hills is one of the best day trips from Perth with dogs.
In springtime, there are many wildflowers in the national parks, including one of our favourites, John Forrest National Park. Read our guide to the best wildflower spots in Perth for more info.
1. Lesmurdie Falls
Location: Lesmurdie Falls National Park, Forrestfield, WA 6058
Distance from Perth: 45 mins – 25 km

Lesmurdie Falls is the highest waterfall in the area and a spectacular spot that will take your breath away, especially after winter rains when the cascade is at its most dramatic.
Surrounded by bushland, there are walks to suit all levels, ranging from the 600m Lookout Walk (head down the hill from the lookout platform for a great view of Lesmurdie Falls) to the 3km Valley Loop with babbling brooks, colourful wildflowers and the chance to feel the spray at the base of the waterfall.
The park is dog-friendly (on lead only), so you can bring your dog and experience a rejuvenating day at one of the best waterfalls near Perth.
Best combined with: S & R Orchard, Walliston
2. Araluen Botanic Park
Location: 362 Croyden Rd, Roleystone, WA 6111
Distance from Perth: 43 min drive – 37.4 km

Araluen Botanic Park is one of the most colorful spots in the Perth Hills. Located in a sheltered valley, you can view one of the best displays of tulips in the world each year (over 250,000) during Tulip Season, where tulips thrive amongst the cool-climate trees.
The yearly Araluen Tulip Festival is also a must-visit! Araluen is worth visiting year-round, with roses, camellias and quiet trails to explore. Pack a picnic or stop at the on-site cafés, and take your time wandering this peaceful area of the hills.

Best combined with: Raeburn Orchards
3. Roleystone Raeburn Orchards
Location: Raeburn Orchards, 4 Raeburn Rd, Roleystone, WA 6111
Distance from Perth: 34 minutes – 31.1 km

If you prefer to visit just one farm, the Raeburn Orchards are a wonderful place to experience natural produce. While this is a working orchard, Raeburn is also famous among Perth folk as a divine Instagram spot.
Luckily for the kiddos, they offer spring and autumn festivals with bouncy castles and other children’s activities.

The best time to visit Raeburn (when you can take amazing photos) is in the autumn, when the Persimmon trees turn a deep crimson red and orange. Also, they have a Spring Festival in September when the trees are full of pink blossoms.
As each season is different, it’s best to check out their Instagram page to see when the trees are turning colour or flowering! The gorgeous scenery makes this one of the best day trips out of Perth.
Another popular orchard in the Perth Hills is S&R Orchards in Walliston, offering seasonal photography opportunities. Its located near Lesmurdie, making it the ideal combination location for Lesmurdie Falls.
Best combined: Raeburn Orchards with Araluen Botanic Park
Where to Eat
While you’re visiting any of the amazing destinations in the Perth Hills, there are some amazing places to eat that we recommend. These include:
- The Packing Shed at Lawnbrook Estate – A small family-run winery with a welcoming feel. Wine and great food, including a kid-friendly menu.
- La Fattoria – hearty Italian-inspired long lunches. Book ahead if you can – it’s a Perth Hills favourite for a reason.
- Core Cider House: Cider tastings, woodfired pizzas and a deck with fantastic views.

4. Serpentine National Park
Location: Serpentine Falls Rd, Serpentine, WA 6125
Distance from Perth: 50 mins – 66 km

You can sample the Australian bush in the Perth Hills, just 30 minutes from the city. Serpentine National Park, especially the Serpentine Falls, offers spots for picnics or cooling down in the shade.
The park is famous for its beautiful wildflowers and landscape. From August to November, wildflowers in Perth burst into colour, lining the Serpentine River and creating a stunning backdrop with plenty of photo ops!
There are plenty of walking trails in the area, from the easy Serpentine Falls Walk, moderate (6 km) Baldwins Bluff Trail, which winds past beautiful wildflowers and geology, and the longer (14km) Kitty’s Gorge Walk, which follows the Serpentine River.
5. John Forrest National Park
Distance from Perth: 30 mins to 1 hour – 29.6 km

John Forrest National Park is one of those classic Perth Hills spots that locals return to again and again.
You can hike the Railway Heritage Trail with its spooky railway tunnel, or take on the longer Eagle View Trail for beautiful views and wildflower spotting in season.
The Glen Brook Trail is an easy loop past creeks and bushland, great for spotting wildflowers along the way. Hovea Falls is one of the top sights here, where the water tumbles into shallow granite pools. Kangaroos are often spotted here, especially as the day cools.

We took our own food and ate at the main picnic area, which is a great place to rest and refuel. You can use the barbecues there, and the kids loved the nature playground.
Best combined with: Lake Leschenaultia or Mundaring Weir, or a pub lunch at the atmospheric Mundaring Weir Hotel
6. Lake Leschenaultia
Location: Lake Leschenaultia, Chidlow, WA 6556
Distance from Perth: 45 mins-1 hour – 50km
Originally built over a century ago as a railway dam, Lake Leschenaultia is now one of the most popular recreational lakes near Perth. The lake features a wide sandy beach and calm swimming areas, complete with a pontoon.
You can bring your kayak or paddleboard (hire is sometimes available on weekends) and spend a morning on the water before exploring the 3 km walking and cycling trail around the lake.
You’ll find picnic lawns, free barbecues, playgrounds (including a train-themed one for kids. There’s a kiosk for drinks and snacks, or you can pack your own picnic.
If you’d like to stay overnight, Lake Leschenaultia also has a camping area with powered and unpowered sites, hot showers, and camp kitchens.
Please note that dogs are not allowed here, and the lake may close on high fire danger days. It’s worth checking before you drive up.
Day Trips Out of Perth: Heading North
Within just a couple of hours’ drive from Perth, you can be sandboarding down giant slopes in Lancelin, wandering the alien-like Pinnacles Desert, or feasting on fresh lobster by the ocean in Cervantes.
Here are our top day trip recommendations.
7. Sand Boarding at the Lancelin Sand Dunes
Location: Lancelin Sand Dunes, Beacon Rd, Lancelin, WA 6044
Distance from Perth: 1 hour, 25 minutes (128 km)

The Lancelin Sand Dunes are gorgeous white sand dunes. They are also located about an hour south of The Pinnacles along the same route.
Lancelin Sand Dunes offer many activities, including off-roading and sandboarding. Both of these destinations make great Perth day tours. View our guide to sandboarding at Lancelin sand dunes here.
Best combined with: The Pinnacles Desert
8. The Pinnacles Desert
Location: The Pinnacles Desert, Nambung, WA 6521
Distance from Perth: 2 hours (288 km)

Without a doubt, the Pinnacles give you landscapes you are unlikely to see anywhere else in the world,
The Pinnacles are one of the best things to do outside Perth. The desert really is an out-of-this-world sight. Located in Nambung National Park, the Pinnacles themselves only warrant an hour’s visit.
As their name suggests, the Pinnacles are curious sandstone-pointed rock formations that are extremely unique!

If we made this a weekend trip, we’d choose to stay at the Pinnacles Edge Resort
Best combined with Cervantes, and lunch at the Lobster Shack
If you are looking for some guided tours for The Pinnacles or Lancelin, check out our recommendations below.
9. Cervantes
Location: Cervantes, WA 6511
Distance from Perth: 2 hours – 200 km
Cervantes is a classic coastal escape that is all about sun, sea and a laid-back vibe. Best known as the gateway to the Pinnacles Desert, this small fishing town is more than just a base for exploring the nearby beautiful limestone formations. It’s also one of the top holiday spots north of Perth.

You can feast on the freshest rock lobster straight from the source, walk along white sandy beaches, or cast a line from the jetty. Hansen Bay and Thirsty Point Lookouts offer some fantastic panoramic views of the area. If you enjoy snorkeling and surfing, then head to the white sands and bright blue waters of Hangover Bay.
A stop at the Lobster Shack is almost a rite of passage here. It is only about half an hour north of the Pinnacles and well worth it for a feast of Western Rock Lobster. Cervantes also has relaxed stays like the RAC Cervantes Holiday Park if you decide to linger a little longer.
10. Yanchep National Park and Yanchep Lagoon
Location: Yanchep Beach Rd & Indian Ocean Dr, Yanchep WA 6035
Distance from Perth: 40-minute drive (51 km)

This large National Park has a wide range of native animals and birds, including Black Cockatoos, Western Grey Kangaroos, Rosella, Galahs, Honeyeaters, willy wagtails, and Kookaburra. In the early evening, hundreds of kangaroos come out and are close enough to get good photos. In addition, there is a large outdoor enclosure with 11 Koalas.
Several trails are in the park. Many of them are flat surfaces, suitable for children. For example, the 45-minute wetland walk and another similar length through a collapsed cave system are now a gorge.
Although not as famous as the kangaroos and koalas of Yanchep National Park, there are also 400 caves.
A new attraction is the Trees Adventure Yanchep Park. There are several different levels of courses suitable for different ages. We have done the park in Dwellingup and absolutely loved it.
The best thing to do when visiting Yanchep is to pack a picnic. A café also sells coffee, ice cream, chocolates and a visitor centre.
Yanchep National Park and Yanchep Lagoon are a full day trip, offering beach, forest and caves – you will be very busy on this day trip.
11. Gravity Discovery Centre, Gingin
Location: Gravity Discovery Centre, Gingin, WA 6503
Distance from Perth: 1 hour – 80 km

Visiting the Gravity Discovery Centre near Gingin is a treat if you’re into science and stargazing.
The centre is packed with hands-on exhibits and interactive displays that kids love, while the Cosmology Gallery has plenty to keep adults interested too. For something a little different, climb the 45 metre Leaning Tower of Gingin and put gravity to the test.
It is a favourite with families. If you are visiting in the evening, the observatory is open for stargazing sessions, or you can drop in during the day for a closer look at the sun through special solar telescopes.
Stop in at the Gravity Café for a coffee or an ice cream, then wander through the gift shop for a few quirky finds. If you’re visiting in spring, it’s worth joining one of the guided walks through the surrounding bushland, when the wildflowers are at their best.
Best combined with: A drive through the Chittering Valley, and delicious treats from Bindoon Bakehaus
12. Guildford
Location: Guildford WA 6055

I have to admit I am guilty of racing straight through picturesque Guildford with my single-minded desire to get to the gastronomic wonders of the Swan Valley. That’s a mistake; historic Guildford is a destination in its own right, meriting at least a few hours of treasure hunting in the antique shops, a slow lunch at the Guildford Hotel (or Rose and Crown), and an exploration of the Museum of National History.
You can read our full guide to the top things to do in Guildford here.
Day Trips from Perth: Heading East and North East
Heading east of Perth, you’ll find rolling hills, heritage towns and beautiful countryside. Think fresh farm produce, wineries and stunning wildflowers. These destinations are perfect for a slower-paced day out!
13. The Swan Valley
Location: Swan Valley, Herne Hill, WA 6055
Distance from Perth: 33-minute drive (25 km) in good traffic

With minimal driving, the Swan Valley is a wonderful taste of Australia. This is why it is on our list of top short day trips from Perth. It’s incredibly picturesque at any time of the year, set along the banks of the Swan River with vines and a mountain backdrop. It really is a vino and foodie’s heaven, with plenty of things for the whole family.
It is also one of Australia’s warmest and oldest grape-growing areas! The restaurants and world-class wineries here serve excellent wines, and there is a lot for families to do. Some of the top boutique wineries, like Mandoon Estate and Oakover Grounds, are family-friendly, with kiddie playgrounds and even a lake for fishing and boating.
In addition, there are famous places like Outback Splash, and not to mention the cuddly animal farm!
Do you not want to drive yourself but would rather have a guided Swan Valley tour? Here are some of our favorites below.
If You Decide to Make it a Weekend Getaway
Stay at Brookleigh Estate Swan Valley or the Novotel Vines Resort.
14. Bell Rapids
Lookout Location: Campersic Rd, Brigadoon, WA 6069

One of the most attractive waterfalls around Perth, Bells Rapids, merits a few hours or at least a leisurely picnic by the river. There is a stunning footbridge and a dog-friendly walk.
If you prefer to enjoy a wine or beer after your outdoor exertions, you might consider Upper Reach Winery and Pizzeria, known for its high-quality wines and delicious pizzas.
Also in the area, Txoko Brewing. Enjoy wood-fired pizzas, sharing plates and other fantastic dishes. You’ll also find a large playground and plenty of space for children to play.
15. Caversham Wildlife Park
Location: Caversham Wildlife Park, Whiteman Park, WA 6068
Distance from Perth CBD: 30 mins – 22 km

Caversham Wildlife Park is a great spot to get up close with Australia’s most fascinating animal species. Hand-feed kangaroos, take a photo with a koala, hang out with the wombats, and experience Australian farm life at Molly’s Farm.
Plan to get there early, as the animal photo opportunities and shows are at specific times, and the park is open from 9 AM until 4.30 PM. The entry fee actually includes the animal photos, so it’s both a fun and affordable day out.
This Perth day tour includes an exclusive tour of Caversham!
16. Avon Valley / Toodyay
Distance from Perth: 1 hour – 70 km

The Avon Valley is an easy escape from Perth, just an hour’s drive east, but it feels a world away. Rolling hills, the Avon River and old country towns like Toodyay set a slower pace.
In spring, the whole valley has a beautiful color, from bright everlastings along the roadside and orchids tucked into the bush.

Toodyay is an excellent base for a wander. Walk along Stirling Terrace, check out Connor’s Mill or take the Bilya Walk Track beside the river. Add in a good coffee or a bakery stop, and you have a classic WA day out.

There is the option to hike to the top, but the trail is steep and challenging, so most people opt to drive. Either way, pack some food and plenty of water to enjoy a picnic at the summit.
We recommend combining your visit with a day in York, WA’s oldest inland town, with highlights like the York Motor Museum and Botanic Gardens. The Mount Brown Lookout is very near York.
Thinking of staying overnight? The Lavendale Country Retreat is one of our top recommended Western Australia farmstays. Looking for a hotel? Settlers House is a fantastic hotel option near the centre.

You can read our guide to all the top Fremantle attractions here.
22. Penguin Island
Location: Penguin Island, WA 6168

Penguin Island is absolutely stunning, just a five-minute ferry ride from Rockingham, and it’s part of the protected Shoalwater Islands Marine Park. It’s home to the world’s smallest wild penguins, known as Fairy Penguins or Little Penguins, who stand at just over 30 cm tall!
The island is open from October to early June, closing during penguin nesting season (early June to September) and on Christmas Day.
Although the Discovery Centre is now permanently closed, there’s still plenty to do, such as swim, snorkel, wander the nature trails, or relax on the beautiful beaches. You can also book a wildlife cruise or kayak and get closer to the penguins as well as dolphins, sea lions, pelicans, and even birds of prey.
23. Rockingham
Location: Rockingham, WA 6168
Distance from Perth: 1 hour – 48 km

Heading south from Perth, one of the top places to visit is Rockingham, with 37 km of stunning beaches. It’s also close to Penguin Island, so you might consider an overnight stay to experience both places, though its not really necessary. For something central and easy, the Quest Rockingham offers serviced apartments within walking distance of the foreshore. Rockingham Apartments are also ideal for their space and kitchen facilities.
Enjoy the calm waters at Palm Beach or Rockingham Beach, and head for a scenic coastal walk at Point Peron. If you love to try out adventure activities, you can try kite surfing, dive with dolphins, or head to Shoalwater Islands Marine Park for snorkeling and kayaking.
Nature trails and picnics in Churchill Park make this a very relaxing day trip choice.
24. Rottnest Island
Location: Rottnest Island, WA 6161 – Offshore (25–45 min ferry)

Rottnest Island is 18 kilometres off the coast of Perth. The trip definitely packs some punch: white sand beaches (including one of the best beaches close to Perth), turquoise waters, and a no-car policy where everyone gets around on bikes! Let’s also not forget to get a selfie with the little local Quokkas! Rottnest Island feels like a world of its own. You have to go to know what makes it so special. Rottnest is well-worth visiting!

However, be prepared to pay! A day trip from Perth to Rottnest Island will cost a family of four a couple of hundred dollars due to the cost of the ferry tickets. Throw in meals and bike hire; it is an expensive Perth day trip.
Consider spending the night if you can. If You Decide to make it a Weekend Getaway, we’d choose to stay at the Karma Rottnest on the island.
How to Get to Rottnest Island
It takes about 25 minutes to reach, depending on which ferry you take. The shortest route is from Fremantle, about a 25-minute ferry ride. You can also take the ferry from Hillarys Boat Harbour (45 minutes) or a ferry from Barrack Street Jetty (90 minutes).
What to Eat
OMG! There is one place you have to try: The Rottnest Bakery. The highlight of our holidays on Rottnest as a child was going to the bakery for a loaf of freshly baked bread. It really is a Rottnest Icon. Nowadays, they offer more sophisticated fare, like organic meat pies and the classic jam & cream doughnut!
Looking for a unique Rottnest Island experience? Check out some really cool ones below.
25. Mandurah
Location: Mandurah, WA, Australia
Distance from Perth: 52 minutes driving time (72 km)

Mandurah is one of the best day trips from Perth, and it is known for its beautiful waterways and wildlife. It’s an easy escape from the city and the perfect day trip from Perth with kids (or without). If you are looking for a fun activity, try seeking out the The Giants of Mandurah.
One of the main things to do in Mandurah is explore the estuary (twice the size of Sydney Harbour!). Try a dolphin-spotting cruise and take in the stunning views.
For a more hands-on experience, you can hire a small boat, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard.
My kids still want to take a trip on the Mandurah pirate ship, or do a boat cruise of Mandurah’s canals at Christmas time.
Mandurah’s beaches are also well worth a visit. They are renowned throughout Western Australia for their beauty. Elsewhere, the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre is also well worth a visit. The Mandjar Markets, open on weekends, offer a chance to see local crafts, sample treats, and enjoy live entertainment.
26. Yalgorup National Park and Lake Clifton

Distance from Perth: 1 hour, 23 minutes (127 km)

Yalgorup National Park is a real hidden gem on the south coast, best known for the ancient thrombolites at Lake Clifton.
These living rock-like structures are over 2,000 years old, and you can view them safely from a timber boardwalk skimming the lake’s edge. The park is also home to coastal dunes, tuart forest and a chain of lakes home to ample birdlife.

Close to the city centre, make sure you walk the Mangrove Boardwalk in the Leschenault Inlet. Bunbury caters to families and adventurers with a variety of activities.
The Big Swamp Wildlife Park is a hit with children, featuring native animals and a playground. For a dose of adrenaline, the Bunbury Action Park offers go-karting, water slides, and mini-golf, ensuring a fun-filled day for everyone.
If you’re interested in visiting Bunbury, make sure you read our locals’ guide to the top things to do in Bunbury. It’s also worth considering an overnight stop. You can read about the top accommodation in Bunbury here. For inspiration, see how Bunbury fits into our Perth to Margaret River road trip.

More Than 2 Hours – Long Day Trips from Perth (Only if You Love Driving!)
Now, I would recommend you plan an overnight stay if you’re planning to visit one of these places, but if you’re short on time, a day trip from Perth is doable if you don’t mind the long drives there and back.
However, remember that while Western Australian roads are generally good, there are native wildlife that come out at night and care should be exercised at all times.
30. Jurien Bay
Location: Jurien Bay, WA 6516
Direction: North
Distance from Perth: 2 hours 20 mins – 2 hours, 40 mins – 190 km

Jurien Bay is a classic seaside escape, where turquoise water meets long white beaches. It’s the beginning of Western Australia’s beautiful Coral Coast area,
The curved jetty is fantastic for a sunset walk or a spot of fishing, and the foreshore has a great playground and picnic area for families. Out on the water, the Jurien Bay Marine Park (stretching between Wedge Island and Green Head and extending about 10 kilometres offshore) is home to an incredible variety of colourful fish.
If you book a tour, you’ll also have the chance to spot playful Australian sea lions, and rock lobster tours are popular too.
During wildflower season, you’ll also have the chance to spot some of Western Australia’s best wildflowers.
On the way back to Perth, or a short 30-minute drive from town, explore the Pinnacles, where towering limestone formations make for a truly unforgettable stop.
You could also venture to Jurien Bay. Read our Fun Things to Do in Jurien Bay, WA, for all the details.
31. Black Diamond Lake
Location: Black Diamond Lake, WA 6225
Direction: South (Ferguson Valley)
Distance from Perth: 2 hours 15 mins – 190 km
If you’re hunting out hidden gems just a day-trip from Perth, Black Diamond Lake (also known locally as Black Diamond or Black Diamond Mine Pit) should be right at the top of your list. It’s a popular swimming spot and perfect for a relaxed day.
Keep in mind: the lake is part of an abandoned open-cut mine, and past mining activity means the water has a low pH, and signs warn people to swim at their own risk. The levels are regularly checked by the Shire of Collie. Check their website and look out for signs to be safe. There are no facilities available, so make sure you bring everything you need for the day, including picnic gear, towels, and water.

32. Ferguson Valley
Location: Ferguson Valley, Dardanup / Wellington Mill, WA 6236
Direction: South
Distance from Perth: 2 hours – 170 km

Ferguson Valley is an amazing escape from the city into rolling hills, forests, and farmland. It’s one of the best weekend trips from Perth for food, wine, and lots of fresh air.
Visit world-class wineries and craft breweries, hike the trails in Wellington National Park, spot the quirky gnomes at nearby Gnomesville, and enjoy a bite to eat at one of the many award-winning restaurants.

We loved staying at Ferguson Farmstay for a weekend getaway and experiencing Australian farm life – the farm activities are perfect if you’re travelling with kids. You can read our guide to the top Ferguson Valley accommodation here.
Ferguson Valley is incredibly picturesque at any time of year. This region is heaven for wine enthusiasts and foodies, but also has plenty of activities to keep the whole family entertained. You can read our full guide to the best Ferguson Valley restaurants and Breweries.

33. Busselton
Location: Busselton WA 6280
Direction: South-west
Distance from Perth: 2 hours, 24 minutes driving (223km)

If you’re visiting Perth and don’t have time for a multi-stop trip, Busselton is a great destination to visit from Perth, provided you don’t mind the drive (minimum 5 hours return, with no traffic).
Busselton is located on the stunning southwest coastline with stunning beaches and a friendly atmosphere.. If possible, a one-night stay would also be worthwhile if you have kids, allowing you to travel only one way each day. We loved our stay at the Broadwater Resort. I also highly recommend the Beachfront Abbey Resort.
You could also consider a road trip over a number of days. If this sounds like something you’d love, make sure you read our full Perth to Busselton road trip itinerary.
A must-visit on a Perth to Busselton day trip is Busselton Jetty, which stretches an impressive 1.8 km out into Geographe Bay. Walking along the jetty, you’ll have fantastic views of the surrounding coastline. For a unique experience, take the Jetty Train to the end, where the Underwater Observatory awaits.
Busselton’s calm and clear waters are ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and water sports. The foreshore has excellent family facilities, including playgrounds, picnic areas, and walking paths.
If you’re interested in learning about the history, make sure you visit the Busselton Museum!

34. Wave Rock
Location: Wave Rock, Hyden, WA 6359
Direction: East
Distance from Perth: 4 hours – 340 km

Wave Rock, near Hyden, is one of Western Australia’s most iconic landmarks. Formed over 2.7 billion years ago, this 15-metre-high granite formation (shaped like a giant ocean wave) is jaw-dropping and offers plenty of Instagram-worthy photo opportunities.
Due to the distance from Perth, it’s worth booking an overnight stay near Wave Rock or in the town of Hyden. You can discover everything you need to know in our Wave Rock guide, including the top places to stay.
We headed to Wave Rock recently on a 4 day road trip and it was a very long drive there – in the words of my daughter “You’d have to be super committed to do this as a day trip!”
Either way, we would highly recommend going to Wave Rock via the Tin Horse Highway near Kulin and the Dog Cemetery at Corrigin!
When to Visit Perth

We believe that September and October, and then March through May, are the best months to visit. June, July, and August are the wettest months. July is the coolest month, with an average temperature of 18 degrees.
One of the best seasons to visit is the Perth wildflower season, which coincides with spring in the southern hemisphere. While it depends on the season (and factors such as rain), the best months to visit the wildflowers are late August, September, and early October. Read more about the best time to visit in our guide to the best time to visit Western Australia, and great things to do in Perth in winter.
We would avoid visiting during the peak Christmas and New Year period. Accommodation is full, and the things that make these places such special places to visit are less attractive!
Perth has a long, hot, dry summer that starts in November and cools down in March. In January and February, the temperature is in excess of 40 degrees ( F) for 4-5 days in a row. You need to look for indoor activities during these times, as the sun is very hot. February has an average temperature of 30 degrees (F), but as the children have returned to school, there are fewer people at most attractions.
