Wondering where the Araluen Tulip Festival in Perth is? Here’s everything you need to know, including tips for visiting Araluen Botanic Park for the annual tulip festival and the best time to visit.
The Araluen Tulip Festival in Araluen Botanic Park is a colorful welcome to spring and one of the best places to see tulips in Australia. Located just out of Perth, in the Darling Range, the festival is a great day out.
With over 200,000 tulips in full bloom and more than 70,000 spring bulbs, the park transforms into a riot of colour across acres of developed gardens. This is an excellent springtime activity to add to your “to-do” list. In fact, the Perth Tulip Festival is just one of many incredible day trips from Perth.

Araluen Tulip Festival Perth Dates
The 2026 Araluen Tulip Festival dates are yet to be announced
Why do I say, planned? The tulips are naturally growing plants, and so, while the intention is for them to begin blooming in mid-August, this will depend on the weather in Perth.
Over the past few years, I have checked out the Araluen Instagram account to get a good idea of what the tulips are doing in real-time. I have even seen the annual springtime festival end early due to unexpected early hot weather.
Last year, I noticed that the blooms were out a few days before the official start date. They were advertising “come and see the tulips in peace”! That’s because the Araluen Tulip Festival gets pretty crazy.

Getting to Araluen Botanic Park and Parking Tips
The easiest way is to drive from Perth. We have visited Araluen a few times during the Tulip Festival, and parking can be a bit of an issue.
If you go at the height of the tulips’ flowering (you will know by following the Araluen Instagram account), there are a LOT of people.
There are overflow carparks below the main creek. On the day we last visited, during a weekday and after the flowers had eased off a bit, we were able to pay at the drive-through kiosk and then park at the top of Araluen Botanic Park.
Araluen is particularly challenging to reach via public transport, typically requiring two buses and a lengthy walk, or the Armadale train and a similarly long walk. Taking a taxi instead of walking is often the best option.

Our Experience at the Perth Tulip Festival, Araluen Botanical Gardens
On our very first visit to Araluen with kids, we visited in early September on a sunny Saturday, the first day of sun Perth had seen in months. It appeared that we and every other Perth family thought that the Araluen Springtime Tulip Festival would be a good idea. They were packed with people, but despite that, it was a picture-perfect family outing.

It was a beautiful atmosphere – like a carnival, with a kaleidoscope of cultures and a fantastically festive feeling about the day, as everyone celebrated the end of a Perth winter and basked in the warm sunshine.
On subsequent visits in more recent years, we have gone once towards the end of September and the crowds were less, but some of the flowers were on the droopy side. And then another year, the same week… and many of the tulips had gone all together.

The Araluen Botanical Gardens themselves offer an incredible range of secret nooks, crannies, and pathways. Once you arrive at the parking area (which, incidentally, was full – and we parked in an overflow area), you come to the main area, where there’s a train stop and beautiful sets of Tulip garden beds.
This area is absolutely stunning – but also genuinely FULL as people lined up (even jostled) to take photos and get the best Instagram opportunity.
Our verdict – This is a 110% family-friendly outing. Araluen Park was full of families enjoying themselves, making for a wonderful experience to celebrate the beginning of spring, the rest of Perth.

Perth Tulip Festival Tips

When is the Best Time to Visit?
To enjoy the Araluen Tulip Festival without the crowds, consider visiting during the week. We’ve been told that after 3 pm is generally quieter and there might be opportunities for solitude in the late afternoon. The park closes at 5:00 pm, and entry will not be permitted after 4:00 pm.
It’s not just the tulips that come to life at Araluen; there is a stunning range of flowers.

Head Into the Perth Hills

If you must go on the weekend, once you arrive at Araluen Park, head off into the Perth hills (sounds romantic) by going past the main train stop and the café.
Head up the valley, where there are many more tulip beds and picnic areas. And, best of all, there were very few people there in comparison to the main areas.
Pack a Picnic Lunch

Not only is the food expensive, but there are long queues on busy days. Take a picnic rug for a fun family picnic experience. Once you get out of the main area near the café and train stop, there are some lovely uncrowded areas.
If you’d prefer to buy food at the Tulip Festival, there’s Chalet Healy Café with a dine-in and takeaway pizzeria and plenty of food trucks, including:
Take the Trackless Train

The trackless train is also running during the festival. It’s about 20 minutes plus wait time (30 minutes on a busy weekend). During the Tulip Festival, train rides are $10 per seat (adults and children). On A busy Saturday, there was an enormously long wait – up to 30 minutes.
However, we were told that on a quiet day, the passionate driver explains all the different aspects of the park – another reason to go when there are fewer people. Visit the Araluen Facebook page for the latest updates.
Araluen for Babies, Toddlers and Kids

Much of Araluen Botanic Park is pram-friendly. So, even if your toddler likes to walk, pack your pram for the picnic basket.
During the festival, kids will love the mermaid hair and face painters, if you are prepared to line up.

Araluen Tulip festival should be on your list for Perth with kids. Make sure you also explore the fantastic Perth playgrounds and the top family accommodation in Perth.

Araluen Tulips Photography Tips

When you first arrive at the initial Tulip beds, there are lots of ropes around the garden beds. If you go further away from the crowded area, there are no ropes. So, if you’re looking for a genuinely authentic photo, then look for tulip flowers higher in the hills.

Consider visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon for better photography and to avoid the busy lunchtime period. Our number one hint for photography is – be patient – and considerate of others!

Beyond the Festival

There’s still plenty to do outside of the spring festival dates. The park is lovingly maintained by the Araluen Botanic Park Foundation. Read our full Araluen Botanic Park guide for in-depth information on everything you need to know, from where to eat to even wedding ceremonies at the park. Here are some of the things you could do outside festival season:
- Visit cafés such as Chalet Healy Café and enjoy dining from the verandah overlooking
- Stinton Creek, or use the garden’s picnic tables or BBQs.
- Take time to explore the park’s heritage.
- Explore the beautiful flowers (not just tulips), including Roses and camellias. The International Camellia Society even recognises the camellias as one of the world’s Camellia Gardens of Excellence.
- Enjoy live entertainment at some weekends.
