Last Updated on 17 July 2024 by Ariana Svenson

Wondering what to do in Fremantle? Fremantle is a portside town with a rich history and plenty to do. You could easily spend a few days exploring the Fremantle attractions and all the other amazing things to do in Fremantle.

I love Fremantle Western Australia! In fact, there have been a lot of times when I thought I loved Freo more than Perth. It’s definitely the vibe; you know you are in a seaside or port town with the smell of the ocean carried in the breeze or even the occasional call of the seagulls.

Fisherman’s Harbour, Fremantle

It’s got a well-preserved centre with some beautiful old buildings, plus it packs a punch for museums; some of my favourites are in Fremantle. Let’s not start with the food – Freo has wonderful Italian and a rich mix of other cultures in this culturally vibrant city.

Don’t sit around reading about these Fremantle attractions – get going for a great day – or weekend out. By the way, if you’re looking for fun things to do in fremantle with kids, check out our guide on it.

The best time to visit Fremantle is between Spring and Autumn when temperatures are milder, and there are fewer crowds.

Walyalup – Fremantle

Both sides of the Yerbal Derrigan (Swan River) at Fremantle are known as Walyalup in the Whadjuk language.  The Whadjuk people (part of the Noongar language group) are acknowledged as the Traditional Custodians of the Walyalup area, and their cultural and heritage beliefs are important to understanding this land.

Walyalup might mean place of the Walyo or Woylie, a small brush-tailed bettong or kangaroo rat, or alternatively “lungs”

The ‘lungs’ name refers to the air flowing up and down the river.  In the morning the easterly wind travels from the hills and along the river to Fremantle.  In the afternoon the sea breeze travels from the sea along the river.

27 Amazing Things to do in Fremantle

There are so many things to do in Fremantle it’s hard to know where to start, so we’ve split this list into some of the top things to do: historical attractions, breweries, and day trips.

The top landmarks include the Fremantle Prison, the Round House, and the Fremantle Arts Centre are all worth visiting while staying in Fremantle.

After learning more about the history, you may be looking forward to spending time on the beach.

Here’s everything you need to know.

1. Visit Cappuccino Strip Strip Fremantle

Fremantle South Terrace is affectionately known as the ‘Cappuccino Strip Strip’. This busy avenue is celebrated for its Italian flair.

It has a mix of cafés, restaurants, and pubs, making it a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts and coffee connoisseurs.

Here, the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingles with the tantalizing scents of pizza and pasta, paying homage to Fremantle’s Italian heritage and solidifying its reputation for serving some of the best coffee in Western Australia.

You’ll also find many designer shops, gift stores, and bookshops. Some of the most famous Fremantle markets are also in the area.

2. Explore the Fisherman’s Harbour

Location: Mews Road, Fremantle Harbour

Fisherman’s Harbour has been an operational harbour since the 1900s. It’s just a short walk from the centre of Fremantle. Fishing Boat Harbour offers a unique experience. This busy working port for fishermen is blended beautifully with all types of eateries and a well-known brewery, Little Creatures.

It is a beautiful place to visit or enjoy lunch or dinner with great restaurant choices, with the speciality being, of course…fish and chips!

Order your meal first, then take a stroll around the unique sights of the harbour with stunning views in all directions!

Tip: If you’re visiting Fremantle in October, don’t miss the ‘Blessing of the Fleet’. Many fishing enterprises in the area are Italian, and the fishermen and their families walk through Fremantle carrying two statues of the Madonna.

3. Ride on the Fremantle Tourist Wheel

Location: 34 Mews Road

Opening Times: 10:00-21:00 (22:00 on weekends)

Pricing at the time of writing: $12 per adult and $10 per child.

The Fremantle Tourist Wheel is a key landmark in Esplanade Park, 40m high, offering a unique opportunity to view the city from above. When you ride, you will get a stunning panoramic view of Fremantle’s charming streets, Rottnest Island, the harbour, and views out to sea.

Fremantle Tourist Wheel is also particularly enchanting at night; the wheel provides amazing views of the city lights, offering a unique and memorable perspective of Fremantle’s lively atmosphere.

4. Visit Fremantle Markets

Location: South Terrace & Henderson Street

A visit to the famous Fremantle Markets is a must! This historic marketplace, with its roots stretching back to 1897, is a great place to learn about the local culture and try local delicacies.

In ‘The Yard’, you’re greeted with the earthy smells of fresh produce from local farms—a feast for the senses and a delight for foodies! Picture piles of fresh fruits and vegetables, gourmet delicacies, and artisanal baked goods.

Then there’s ‘The Hall’, a wonderland of creativity and craftsmanship. Here, each stall tells a story, whether it’s through handmade crafts, unique clothing, or quirky souvenirs. This part of the market is perfect for finding that one-of-a-kind memento or gift.

5. Explore the Fremantle Street Art

Fremantle’s streets are a canvas, telling stories through splashes of colour and bold strokes of creativity. For art enthusiasts and those who love a bit of cultural flair, Fremantle offers an enchanting self-guided street art trail.

The trail is dotted with various artworks, ranging from large-scale murals that breathe life into the city’s historic architecture to the more subtle yet equally captivating graffiti and stencil works hidden in cozy corners.

The street art in Fremantle is created by local legends and celebrated international artists. You’ll encounter the captivating works of artists like ROA, with his distinctive large-scale animal murals.

6. See the Rainbow Sea Containers Fremantle

Location: 1 Canning Highway

The Rainbow Sea Container artwork was installed in 2016 and is now a must-see when visiting Fremantle.

Designed by Perth artist Marcus Canning, the ‘Containbow” is also an Instagram sensation – it’s definitely one of the most Instagrammable places in Perth.

Made up of nine brightly coloured recycled shipping containers, the Rainbow artwork is nine metres high, 19 metres long and weighs around 66 tonnes. We struggled to find the best post for our Instagram shot, so you might want to research before heading there!

Looking for the most Instagrammable cafes in Perth? Then head to Ootong and Lincoln on the corner of South Terrace and Parry St, Fremantle.

Where to park to see the Rainbow Sea Container artwork

We have driven past the Rainbow Sea Containers (dubbed the Containbow) a million times on the busy Canning Highway but have yet to know where to stop!

As you drive to Perth from Fremantle, you will see the Rainbow Sea Container on your left-hand side, and there is a bus stop and shelter at the park. There is also a small sign with a rainbow and a parking sign.

Take this street (East Street), and then when you reach the river, turn left and right at the East Street Jetty. This is paid parking, but you only need 15 minutes to go and get your picture with the containers!

Alternatively, you might like to grab a bite to eat or a coffee at the Beach St Co. (formerly referred to as the “The Kiosk Fremantle”) or use the toilets at the bottom of the hill.

You could also program your GPS East Street Jetty Parking, and then when you arrive there, you will be able to see the Rainbow Sea Container above you.

7. Ootong and Lincoln Cafe and the Artist Zebras Mural

Location: 258 South Terrace, South Fremantle

One of the most unusual things to do in Fremantle is to find the famous mural of artist zebras by Anya Brocl. The piece marks your arrival at a local favourite renowned for its excellent coffee and an array of homemade treats.

Anya Brock, originally sought-after as a street artist, evolved into a sought-after muralist – a transition sparked by a request to paint the side wall of the South Freo café, Ootong & Lincoln. Her Zebras have since been a must-see highlight along South Terrace in South Fremantle.

Ootong and Lincoln is famed for its brunch offerings, yet it’s just as inviting for a leisurely lunch.

If you’re a fan of Anya Brock’s work, there are over 60 large-scale murals across Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and even Los Angeles.

8. Visit Glowing Rooms

9. The Roundhouse

Location: 15 Captains Lane

Step back in time at The Roundhouse, the oldest surviving building in Western Australia, nestled atop a hill in Fremantle. Built by convicts in the 1830s, this remarkable 19th-century heritage structure has a rich and varied history that mirrors the evolution of Fremantle itself.

Originally constructed as a convict holding facility, The Roundhouse later transitioned into a police lock-up in the latter part of the 19th century.

Its walls have witnessed many chapters of history: it has served as accommodation for the Water Police and later as a storage facility for the Fremantle Ports.

Today, it stands proudly as a museum, offering a window into the past of this vibrant port city.

Daily tours allow you to explore The Roundhouse for free and immerse yourself in its intriguing past. This historic building not only offers a glimpse into the life of early settlers and convicts but also boasts breathtaking views of Fremantle and the expansive Indian Ocean from its vantage point on the hill.

It’s a must-visit for anyone keen to unravel the storied tapestry of Fremantle’s history.

10. Fremantle Shipwreck Museum

Location: 47 Cliff Street

One of the top Fremantle activities is visiting the WA shipwreck museum, the perfect place to learn about the fascinating maritime history of Western Australia.

The Shipwrecks Museum is also a great place to visit with kids. The highlight is the hull of the Batavia, which is kept in a temperature-controlled room in the museum.

The museum also offers a glimpse into the lives of early explorers and settlers who braved the treacherous waters of the Indian Ocean. Alongside the fascinating relics, the museum features interactive exhibits and multimedia displays.

We loved this museum. You can read our review of the WA Shipwreck Museum here.

WA Maritime Museum

11. WA Maritime Museum

Location: Victoria Quay Road

Entry Fees at the time of writing: Standard – $15/Concession $10/Junior 15 years and under – Free

On a bigger scale than the Shipwreck Museum, the WA Maritime Museum offers excellent things to do in Perth with kids. This museum offers local history and plenty of hands-on exhibits.

My personal favourites are the Submarine and Australia II. Like SciTech, they always show different kid’s activities in Perth for the children during Western Australian school holidays.

Check the official WA Maritime Museum website here for more information.

12. The Army Museum of Fremantle, WA

Location: Artillery Barracks, 6 Burt Street

Entry Fees at the time of writing: Adults $15.00, Seniors or Concessions $10, Kids aged 6-17 $10

For budding military enthusiasts, the Army Museum of WA Fremantle is an excellent place to visit in Fremantle. FYI, it is also called the War Museum Perth or the Fremantle Military Museum.

Once inside the Army Museum in Fremantle, there are World War 1, World War 2, and then modern wars (Korea and Afghanistan, as well as peacekeeping missions and many others). It’s not just about the war equipment, but the history of the wars and how they came about.

If you love history and more traditionally presented information (this is not a “new style” museum), then this is a place where you could spend hours immersed in the history of Australia’s men and women in military campaigns.

In some ways, it is more history than military. We spent an hour with kids aged 2, 7 and 11 – the older your kids are, the longer you will spend.

Logistics For a Visit

  • We needed to park in the street outside the barracks – it was only a short walk.
  • You need to sign in at the gate while visiting a military installation.
  • The entry is paid at the main building.
  • Many enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers share their knowledge – what a privilege to learn from them.

Beaches, Sunsets and Swimming

If you’re in Fremantle and looking to embrace the Australian beach experience, you’re in for a treat. Fremantle City’s main beaches – each with its unique charm – are perfect for various activities, whether you’re in the mood for a leisurely swim, kite surfing, or just a relaxing day soaking up the sun.

One of the first things you’ll notice in Perth during summer is the arrival of the “Fremantle Doctor”, a sea breeze that sweeps through the city, bringing relief from the heat. This cool wind usually kicks in by mid-morning, reaching its peak around 14:00.

It’s a blissful respite for some, but for beachgoers, it’s a hint to choose your spot wisely. If you’re not a fan of being sand-blasted, aim to hit the beach early or find a cozy spot in one of the many beachside cafés to enjoy the ocean view. This breeze makes Perth a slice of paradise for thrill-seekers, particularly windsurfers and kite surfers.

17. Watch the Sunset

One of the top things to do in Fremantle, WA, is watch the sunsets. Perth is known for its fabulous sunsets, with direct views of the sun setting over the Indian Ocean, clear skies, and a palette of vibrant orange and red hues. Read more about the Best Beaches in Perth in our guide.

The clear skies typical of the region enhance this natural beauty, making the sunsets here particularly vivid and memorable. 18. South Beach

One of the best free things to do in Fremantle is to visit the beach. South Beach offers serene waters for relaxed swimming, paddle-boarding, and kayaking enthusiasts. It features a floating pontoon for an added element of fun.

Beyond the water, South Beach caters to a diverse crowd with its playground, shaded areas, and scenic walking tracks. It even includes a designated dog beach, welcoming furry companions.

The on-site café serves various meals and snacks, ideal for a beachside refreshment.

19. Port Beach

One of the top activities in Fremantle is visiting Port Beach – the laid-back, hipster alternative to Scarborough Beach, offering a serene beach experience without the big surf. It connects with Leighton Beach, stretching all the way to South Cottesloe.

This beach is ideal for ocean swimmers and stand-up paddle-boarders, thanks to the gentle waters provided by its sheltered location near Fremantle Harbour. If you have young kids, it will be easy to find a welcoming spot with calm waves and open space.

Beachgoers looking for refreshments can easily access a beachside kiosk for casual snacks. For those seeking a more upscale dining experience, the nearby Salt on the Beach Restaurant offers everything from a relaxed lunch to a romantic waterfront dinner.

20. Bathers Beach

Tucked between South Head’s rock breakwater and Challenger Harbour lies Bathers Beach, Fremantle’s hidden coastal gem. This beach is perfect for those seeking a quick escape without the long journey or bustling crowds.

Bathers Beach is ideal for a refreshing dip or a serene ocean swim, conveniently fitting into any schedule, between meals or for an early morning swim.

21. Coogee Beach

First, ensure you are not confused by Coogee Beach in Sydney, NSW! This is Western Australia’s very own “Coogee.”

Coogee Beach, with its pristine white sand and crystal-clear waters, is not just a beach but a picturesque escape that boasts some of the most spectacular sunsets. This serene spot is famous for its surf and family-friendly atmosphere, making it a favourite for locals and visitors.

The promenade at Coogee Beach is a delightful blend of history and nature, featuring beautifully restored historic buildings and well-maintained parklands.

A standout feature of Coogee Beach is Australia’s first swimming enclosure, which was installed by the City of Cockburn. Known as the Eco Shark Barrier, it has provided a safe and enjoyable swimming environment since 2013.

During the summer, one of the city’s three pontoons is placed within the enclosure, adding an extra fun element to this fantastic swimming spot.

Omeo Wreck, Coogee Beach.

The Omeo Wreck

The Omeo wreck, just 25 meters offshore at Coogee Beach, is Perth’s premier shore-based shipwreck. Adrift since 1905, it’s now part of the Coogee Maritime Trail, with over 55 structures for divers.

Located at Coogee Beach’s northern end, near Socrates Parade, the wreck lies in 2-4m deep water, a historical gem beneath the waves.

22. Ngarkal Beach

Located within the Port Coogee Marina development, Ngarkal Beach, also known as Seagull Beach, is a protected beach perfect for families.

It has shallow, calm waters, but be aware there is a deep drop-off a little further out. Older, more confident kids can swim to the large pontoon and safely into the deeper water.
