Your Guide to the Best Perth Beaches (2024)

Last Updated on 28 May 2024 by Ariana Svenson

Perth has some of the best beaches in Western Australia. There are so many to choose from both in the city and nearby, it’s hard to know where to start! Here’s your guide to the Perth beaches.

perth beach

1. Cottesloe Beach

Distance from Perth CBD: 11.8 km

Cottesloe Beach might be Western Australia’s most famous beach, but it is also my favourite. Cott has pristine sands, stately Norfolk Pines for welcome shade, and grassy knolls ideal for picnics and games.

I’m not usually one for crowds, so it surprised me when I thought about how much I love Cottesloe. I am not sure if the iconic Indiana Tea House, the pine trees, or perhaps memories of long Sunday Sessions at the Ocean Beach Hotel add to the allure. It’s a calm, quiet beach for kids to swim in a carnival-like atmosphere you can’t go past. It’s just a charming place to visit.

The beach is just a 20-minute drive from the city centre and surrounded by beautiful coastlines and views.

Feeling hungry? Cott’s fantastic promenade features a good range of eateries, cafes, and bars serving everything from classic snacks to fancy dinners.

When you’re ready to jump in, the waters around Cott are a brilliant blue—perfect if you plan to swim or snorkel on the reefs. Unsurprisingly, Perth’s most famous beach also has the best shark net…

If you’re a surfer or bodyboarder, you will find small waves good for learners.

If you’re looking for accommodation in Perth by the beach, the Cottesloe Beach Hotel is a top spot. It’s also a great place to grab a drink.

TIP: If you come in March, don’t miss Sculpture by the Sea—it’s when the beach becomes a spectacular open-air art gallery!

2. Floreat Beach

Distance from Perth CBD: 11.1 km

Tucked just a touch north of the more famous City Beach, Floreat Beach is a lovely slice of the Perth Coast. Offering a bit more peace and quiet than its busier neighbours, Floreat Beach is an excellent choice if you want a family-friendly atmosphere and a bit more space.

My grandmother always took us to Floreat Beach when we were kids, so I naturally gravitate here. In some ways, it is an extension of the better-known City Beach, which is more popular and, therefore, more crowded.  I like the quiet, unassuming air at Floreat and think its one of the best for families due to the protected area near the groyne.

There is plenty of space, so rest assured you can still find your slice of paradise even on busy days.

Floreat boasts all the essentials for a classic beach day: a grassy area with shade, a boardwalk for leisurely strolls, a playground to keep kids amused, and even beach volleyball courts for a bit of friendly competition. Check out the groyne, where surfers catch a few waves if there’s a swell.

The Kiosk at Floreat Beach, with stunning sea views, offers much-needed refreshments and meals. It is perfect for leisurely beachside lunches or early dinners watching the sunset.

3. Mettam’s Pool

Distance from Perth CBD: 15.8 km

Mettam’s Pool is one of Perth’s most popular northern beaches. What makes Mettam’s Pool unique is its calm, shallow waters and abundant marine life.

If you’re looking for a gentle swim and a peek into the ocean’s wonders, Mettam’s Pool is considered to have the best snorkelling in the Perth city area; protected Mettams is good when the sea breeze comes up. You can spot marine life like starfish and octopus. Discover a world of sea creatures, such as banded sweep, sea mullet, anemones, cushion stars, and abalones.

It’s also an excellent option for families, as the natural lagoon is pretty shallow.  The earlier you arrive, the calmer it will be (better for snorkelling). However, that being said, Mettam’s Pool is not a beginner’s snorkelling spot; it’s best to have experience.  (Note my comments earlier in the post – do not head out snorkelling or swimming on these unpatrolled beaches if you are not a proficient swimmer with ocean experiecne).

While there are no cafes directly in the area, there are plenty of options just a short drive away along the scenic West Coast Drive.

That said, it’s so popular that parking can sometimes be a hassle.  If you think Mettam’s is looking a bit busy and are craving some solitude, you might like to head south to Bailey Beach in Trigg.  There are small sand beaches nestled amongst the cliffs, and snorkelling is also good here, as long as it’s not windy. On a rough day, there will be rough seas and rip tides.

4. Bathers Beach, Fremantle

Distance from Perth CBD: 18.6 km

Bathers Beach is a popular beach where Fremantle’s heritage meets the Indian Ocean. It is a must-visit if you’re in the Perth area. Steeped in history, this 300-metre stretch of coastline is Perth’s oldest public beach, surrounded by heritage buildings.

Spread out a towel, go for a dip, or grab a coffee on the boardwalk and take in the lively atmosphere. Bathers Beach is the only beach in WA with a liquor license, so make sure you make the most of visiting Bathers Beach House for a cocktail!

Don’t miss the cannon firing at 1 p.m. daily at the Fremantle Round House—a nod to Fremantle’s past. Afterwards, stroll through the Bathers Beach Art Precinct to discover local artists and pick up unique souvenirs.

The revitalised foreshore bustles with cafes, pubs, and restaurants—ideal for a bite with an ocean view. Stroll along the Sunset Coast, then take a dip at Scarborough Beach Pool to relax.
