It has huge spiritual meaning for them because of the Waugal (or Wagyl), a powerful, snake-like Dreamtime spirit that carved out the waterways as it travelled across the land. The name Derbarl Yerrigan basically means “mixing,” which comes from the area near Burswood where the fresh river water and salty ocean water blend as the tides move in.
The whole river system runs entirely through Whadjuk Noongar boodja (Whadjuk Noongar Country). The Noongar nation is made up of 14 different language groups, and the Whadjuk people are the Traditional Owners and custodians of the greater Perth area, including both the Swan and Canning rivers.
European explorers first made their way up the Swan River back in January 1697. A Dutch captain named Willem de Vlamingh led the crew. After spotting a huge number of native black swans along the banks, he named the waterway Zwaanenrivier (Swan River).
